Experienced, self-driven Department Manager with a strong scientific track record in Microbial Physiology and Systems Biology.

We are looking for an experienced R&D Manager to lead our ‘SysBio – Food’ Department in the corporate R&D Discovery function located at Chr. Hansen’s headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark. As a global bioscience company, we strive to deliver cutting-edge products that address global food and health challenges. The ‘SysBio – Food’ Department is part of the Systems Biology Unit, which applies an integrative systems biology approach for decoding the molecular mechanisms underlying desirable microbial traits and generating comprehensive knowledge on Chr. Hansen’s strains used in various applications. We employ the insights we generate through our research findings in guiding the continuous development of new and superior leads for our innovative products.

The team for you to join

The Systems Biology Unit consists of three Departments, ‘SysBio – Food’, ‘SysBio – Health’ and ‘Bioinformatics & Modeling’, with a total of 25 employees. ‘SysBio – Food’ comprises a team of 6 highly skilled scientists and technicians focused on the in-depth physiological characterization of key industrial strains of Lactic Acid Bacteria and other microorganisms used in food fermentations. As a Department Manager, you will report to the Head of Systems Biology.

The Systems Biology Unit interacts closely with other departments in the R&D Discovery function, which aims at bridging academic research with industrial applications as well as supporting our application and marketing organizations.

What would your role look like
As a Department Manager, you will be responsible for setting the scientific direction of the department in accordance with Chr. Hansen’s vision and strategy. You will lead a team of highly skilled scientists and technicians focused on system-level physiological characterization of key industrial Lactic Acid Bacteria and potentially other bacteria used in food fermentations.

In addition, you will

  • Set and execute the strategy and key priorities of the department in close collaboration with the team members and fellow managers
  • Provide team members with a clear direction and constant development opportunities
  • Actively engage in advancing the application of systems biology approaches for understanding microbial physiology and guiding rational product development
  • Build cross-functional collaborations and lasting relationships across the organization
  • Mediate and maintain collaborations with potential external partners in your area of expertise
  • Ensure the proper documentation of research results and communication of findings across the department, function and relevant stakeholders
  • Secure intellectual property rights.
  • Who are we looking for
    You hold a PhD in Microbiology, Systems Biology, Microbial Biotechnology or a similar field. In addition, you have solid scientific background and proven track record in microbial physiology and systems biology, preferably in the field of lactic acid bacteria, based on several years of research experience. You are confident, have a strong sense of quality and thrive in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

    Furthermore, you have:

  • Leadership/team management experience, preferably in a corporate R&D environment
  • Experience in conducting research in multidisciplinary environments
  • Documented scientific excellence in the area of microbial physiology/systems biology in the form of high-quality publication record
  • The ability to translate knowledge of research findings to commercial value 
  • Experience in research project management 
  • The ability to work with multiple tasks and different stakeholders simultaneously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
