Microsoft Quantum has established Microsoft Quantum Labs across the globe, with locations in Europe, Australia, and the US. The sites are key to the Quantum program, with responsibilities distributed across them. We’re looking for Lab Managers to assist with the ongoing operations and management of our Lab facilities, infrastructure and equipment to keep the sites running safely, smoothly and effectively.
These sites are in unique working environments, at the focal point of a powerful collaboration between industry and academia. To ensure the performant operation of each site, the candidate will report into the Scientific Director and successfully coordinate with the Microsoft team and University personnel at the site, as well as his/her counterparts and stakeholders at other Microsoft Quantum Labs across the world; the local Microsoft country subsidiary; and Microsoft Headquarters-based Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) and other team leads.
Responsibilities Manage day-to-day Lab operations, including but not limited to: inventory small equipment, tools, software and other licenses) and consumables tracking and procurement, bench set up and maintenance, shipping/receiving, lab security/access, test equipment calibration/repairs, minor lab build/repairs, etc. Function as onsite EH&S point of contact: Partner with Scientific Director, Microsoft HQ-based EH&S leads and, as applicable, University EH&S counterparts, to establish, deploy and manage to standards of EH&S protocol and training Undertake risk assessment and hazard analysis Identify and rollout EH&S best practices for Lab Coordinate with other Lab Managers globally and Microsoft HQ-based EH&S leads to report on and continuously improve ‘state of union’ of EH&S across Microsoft Quantum Labs Manage equipment installation/acceptance, maintenance, and service contracts for lab equipment measurement electronics, vacuum pumps, and cooling compressors), MBE, AFM, and FIB/SEM. Function as onsite responder for shutdowns) and brownouts) relating to Microsoft Quantum Lab; troubleshoot and drive relevant post-mortems and actions with Microsoft, University Personnel, and third parties, as appropriate. Understand Lab capacity, throughput and bottlenecks; work to increase both equipment and people-productivity and performance, as relates to Lab use. Establish proactive maintenance schedule and rhythm. Participate in committees and forumsonsite (internally and with third parties) with objective of driving Lab safety, productivity, and performance. In coordination with Scientific Director and Site Management function (local and Microsoft HQ-based), enable and oversee Microsoft personnel access and use of Universityor other third- party institutioninfrastructure, facilities, and equipment. Partner with Redmond Site Group Program Manager and other stakeholders Site Manager, Real Estate & Facilities, Business Manager) on forecasting Lab budget andlab related constructionprojects. Manage physical Lab to its operating and capital expense budget Partner closely and on an as needed basis with Redmond-based Principal Program Manager and globally distributed Lab Managers on global import/export and cascade of other Lab/Site-critical processes, policies, tools/repositories, etc. Partner with Microsoft and University IT on Security-related matters relevant to Lab, such as ensuring security of research data on Lab equipment and Lab-related servers/storage, networking, etc. Establish, track, and manage Lab to target efficiencies and KPIs. Develop and roll up a ‘control center’-type view of Lab Manager accountability areas on a recurring basis. Qualifications BS, MScor PhDinElectrical Engineering, Physics or related field 5+ years Lab management or project/program management experience Experienced in use and maintenance of equipment described above, namely, ultra-high vacuum systemsincluding molecular beam epitaxy systems,cryostats, measurement electronics, vacuum pumps, cooling compressors, AFM and SEM Semiconductor or research lab background and knowledge ofcleanroom processes. Affinity to hardware, including IT hardware, quantum research and or nanomaterials.
