    The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Health Equity to the Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, to commence on May 1, 2023. The Associate Professor is expected to spearhead a research agenda that integrates modern methods from Epidemiology and Artificial Intelligence in the analysis of high-resolution life course data to understand and predict public health issues with a specific focus on health equity.

    Denmark is one of the most data intensive countries in the world, which provide us with extensive possibilities to understand the health of our population and develop predictions for personalized medicine and prevention. At the same time, we believe it comes with an ethical obligation to use these data to search for and identify inequalities in the health care system. The successful candidate is expected to integrate analytical approaches from data science and epidemiology into optimal utilization of such multi-dimensional data, preferable in a life course perspective and with a specific focus on health equity. Epidemiology will also increasingly include less structured data such as smartphone activity data, image or location data, and the method development should also be aimed at including such less-structured data. The Associate Professor is expected to contribute to both theoretical and applied research within this area.

    Job description
    The Associate Professor will participate in an interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment at the Section of Epidemiology. The responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Initiating an independent line of research on Epidemiology and Health Equity at an international competitive level including publication
  • Academic and public dissemination of the results;
  • Acquisition of competitive funding;
  • Providing research-based teaching in Epidemiology at a pre- and post-doctorate level including associated examination;
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers;
  • Engaging in the university's internal and external academic activities.
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate

    • Required qualifications
    Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates.     Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways;
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies;
  • Research-based teaching in Epidemiology;
  • Communicative skills in writing and speaking;
  • Research experience within Epidemiology or Data Science with a specific focus on health equity;
  • Collaborative and communicative skills.

    • The Associate Professor must have the ambition and willingness to compete at an internationally level to make impact.

    • Terms of employment
    The position is a permanent position and the average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

    Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

    The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

    • Application procedure
    After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
